Mid-Century Modern Living in the Berkeley Hills2+ BED, 1.5 BATH
1529 sqft. (apx.)
OFFERED AT $750,000
This property is now fully staged, including the back patio. The deck has been rebuilt, Grizzly Peak has been paved, and this home is now ready to find its next owners!
This Chalet-style home with its clean lines and inviting interior offers a peaceful retreat in the hills. And yet you are close to all of the wonderful amenities of Berkeley: its great neighborhoods, Lawrence Hall of Science, LBL, the UC Campus and Tilden Park. A bus stop is a block away.
This home embodies the highly-desirable mid-century aesthetic. High wood-paneled ceilings with multiple skylights, and large triangular windows provide abundant natural light and sylvan views. The main upstairs living area is open and welcoming with a wood-burning stove and expansive dual-pane windows. Walls and ceilings have been freshly painted, the oak floors refinished, and the kitchen and main bathroom have just been updated. A small deck off the kitchen was also just rebuilt, and provides a pleasant spot to enjoy your morning coffee alfresco.
At the street level you will enjoy a spacious room that would make a third bedroom, great office, or could serve as the family/media room, or comfortable guest quarters with an adjoining half-bath and laundry facilities.
The front garden is planted with drought-tolerant plants and natives. And just down the block is the recently updated Terrace View Park, with basketball court, picnic area, swings and multiple play areas. It’s a great place to spend time outdoors and also enjoy your own neighborhood!

183 Fairlawn has been in this family for more than 40 years! The sellers very much enjoyed living in this home and this neighborhood. They share some of their experiences here:
To prospective buyers of 183 Fairlawn Drive:
The Fairlawn neighborhood has been a great place to call home. It is quiet, full of nature, and surprisingly close to many other Berkeley neighborhoods (Northside, Gourmet Ghetto, Thousand Oaks, Elmwood, etc.). There is easy access to the 65 bus (which goes to downtown Berkeley BART), with the bus stop just a block from the front door.
We enjoy walking, and have used the city-maintained paths leading down the hill from Fairlawn, towards the North Berkeley neighborhood, as well as those leading uphill to Grizzly Peak. A stroll to nearby Lawrence Hall of Science affords great views over the Bay, especially spectacular at sunset. Tilden Park, a short drive (or a longer walk) offers hiking, picnic grounds, and attractions like the steam train and carousel.
The newly renovated park on Fairlawn, just half a block away, provides play areas for children as well as a basketball court. The recent reopening included a neighborhood potluck and a ribbon cutting ceremony presided over by our very able and involved City Councilwoman, Susan Wengraf.
We have really enjoyed living in such a diverse neighborhood. There are several families on the block with small children and there are people who have lived here into their 70s and 80s. There is an active neighborhood earthquake preparedness group, and an email list that covers everything from crime watch to party planning.
The house itself is special. We particularly enjoyed the large, spacious living room. The light from the front and triangle windows changes throughout the day, with Golden Hour being particularly lovely, and the angle of the light varies through the seasons. It is an excellent room in which to relax alone or entertain a group. Both of us are musicians, and we have enjoyed the gorgeous sounds of live music in a room with wood floors and high ceilings.
We have used the downstairs room as an office and a recording studio. With its half bath, it is also well suited to function as a guest room. The upper porch behind the house has provided a very pleasant place to sit in warmer weather, while the EPA-approved wood-burning stove in the living room has made for a cozy atmosphere on colder nights.
183 has been a wonderful home for us, and we hope it will be the same for you.
